Singapore Shophouse Walks book

Photographer Tatyana Kildisheva is a consummate explorer and heritage buff, who puts this passion into her book, “Singapore Shophouse Walks: Chinatown, Blair Plain, Duxton Hill, Tanjong Pagar.” The beautiful hardcover coffee table-style photo book leads the reader on a visual and historical journey around Singapore’s Chinatown and surrounding areas. Tatyana’s photos illustrate the text (some of which was written by Jane herself!) and clear maps show the reader where to find the most picturesque Peranakan shophouses and terraced houses. The book is the second in a series; the first one, which covered Joo Chiat, Katong and Geylang, was published in 2018 and it sold out.

Order “Singapore Shophouse Walks: Chinatown, Blair Plain, Duxton Hill, Tanjong Pagar,” as well as Tatyana’s lovely shophouse cards, on Etsy here or find the book at a number of shops around town, including the China Collection, Cat Socrates, TheAC and Tango Mango.

Bike-A-Local Singapore

Bike-A-Local Singapore was started by avid cyclists Robin McAdoo and Heidi Sarna, to share their love of exploring Singapore by bicycle. They offer 15 DIY self-guided rides, with intriguing titles like the “Three Quarries Ride” and the “Yip Yew Chong Mural” ride. Mapping wizard Robin has stitched together PCNs, backroads and bits of sidewalk to create the 15 rides, with juicy little heritage nuggets mixed in for fun — some feature stops and excerpts from the upcoming book “Secret Singapore” by Heidi & Jerome Lim (Jonglez Publishing, March 2021). When you purchase a ride, you get a link to a “Google MyMaps Route” that you open on your phone, plus you’ll get a link to written instructions. There’s something for everyone, with routes “geared” to different lengths and fitness levels.

Bike-A-Local Singapore is offering a Heritage Holiday Collection “buy-one-get-one-free” deal for both individual and custom rides purchased online by Friday Dec 11, 2020 with code JanesHHC2020.

Louise Hill Designs

Having in lived in Shanghai, Hong Kong and now Singapore, Louise Hill’s heart belongs to Asia and she’s constantly inspired by the region’s energy and vibrant colour. Using her graphic design, illustration and photography skills — after art school Louise worked in high-end packaging design for over 15 years with the likes of Crabtree & Evelyn and Fortnum & Mason — her artwork starts with her photographing buildings, objects, textiles, ribbons and curated vintage props from her collections. She then adds in a dash of illustration and pattern, and sometimes a bit of vintage imagery, and then digitally combines it all into a highly detailed multi-layered finished artwork. Finally, she prints her creation onto canvas or etching paper.
