Civic District: History & Development of Singapore

Civic Disctrict: History & Development of Singapore

This tour takes you around the Civic District on the banks of the Singapore River, the location where the British first started their settlement and trading port. During the walk we will visit many former 19th and early 20th century colonial buildings to admire their architecture, which combines European influences with tropical touches. Many of them have been made into arts venues which we will able to explore both inside and out.

During this walk you will learn about the history of Singapore from pre-colonial times to independence, and hear how a tiny nation became such an economic powerhouse.

After seeing the Civic District we will cross the Singapore River to see how the modern city continues to develop by viewing the modern high rises of the Central Business District (CBD) and the Marina Bay Waterfront. You will observe how the evolution of local architecture is a reflection of our nation's sociopolitical & economic development.
