Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks: Little India at Deepavali - 22 Oct
Price: $75 / ticket

Explore the heart and soul of Singapore’s Indian community — Little India. Today it is a heritage district associated with vibrant colours, loud music, eclectic houses, and air filled with the fragrance of spices. But on this tour, you will be hearing not just about its present-day vibrancy, but also its early days of cattle slaughtering, horse racing, baby delivering and more!

Your tour starts from Rochor/Perak Road where you will be see a lesser-known, religiously diverse, and contrastingly hipster, section of Little India. You will find out about the different community groups worshipping at the religious spaces there, including a visit to the historical and architecturally marvellous Abdul Gaffoor Mosque. You will see the new hip-quotient of the area, and find out how old run-down buildings found a new identity.

Onto Campbell Lane (one of the many roads with a European name) where a myriad of pop-up stalls are found selling everything necessary to celebrate the Hindu festival of Lights, Deepavali, which will be happening round the corner. Garlands, lanterns, oil lamps, sparklers - anything and everything that may bring rays of light into homes, will be sold here.

We then cross the decked-up Serangoon Road to admire the colours and glitters of the massive decorations and on to Buffalo Road/Kerbau Road (names associated with cattle) to discover traditional Indian trades, food, customs, attire, decorations and businesses to uncover the significance of each.

A visit to Tekka Centre to observe where and how locals live and shop. Along the way, you will get to see the last remaining Chinese villa in Little India and the only North Indian temple in Singapore (see if you can spot it). A must-visit is the Sri Veerakaliamman Temple, a national monument, where you learn to appreciate the symbolism and meaning behind Hinduism and its rituals.

Here we will stop for cup of masala tea and some Indian spicy snacks.

We will end at Mustafa Centre, the 24-hour mega-mart and let your guide teach you how to manoeuvre through mind-boggling variety of the reportedly 300,000 items on sale.

Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a Verlocal message to all registered.
