Celebrating Singapore's 54th Birthday - 8 August
Price : S$70 / ticket
This tour is a celebration in and of itself, offered just one day before Singapore's August 9th National Day festivities which this year will be held at the Padang as it's Bicentennial year!
We will explore how this key nation-building event has developed since the first one at the Padang in 1966, which marked the one-year anniversary of Singapore’s separation from Malaysia.
Back then, it was a relatively humble event including a variety of military and civil contingents marching past City Hall and onto the city streets. Military bands played, with a finale featuring a lion and dragon dance performance.
Over the years it has developed into a highly choreographed affair involving as many ordinary citizens as possible. New spectacles are added from time to time, such as the debut in 1970 of the dramatic “flypast” stunts by the Singapore Air Force.
We will learn how the participants practice for the many colourful shows and parades, and how ticket sales for this extremely popular occasion are handled. We will also examine how the themes have developed over time, from “Majulah! The Singapore Spirit,” to “Building Our Singapore of Tomorrow,” “One Nation Together,” and “We Are Singapore.”
We’ll visit the key places associated with the celebrations — the (new) National Stadium, the Float@Marina Bay, and the Padang, this year's main venue. Starting at the National Stadium, we will then head to Marina Bay. From this aquatic stage we’ll proceed to the Padang, where will talk about what to expect from this year’s National Day events.
Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and a reminder bring an EZ-Link card to use the MRT; this will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance & will be preceded by a Peatix or Lhoko message to all registered.
