Walking Tour of Hort Park & Gillman Barracks: Nature, Art & Heritage! - 21 June
Price: S$70 / ticket
This historic patch of southern Singapore offers a bit of everything — lush greenery, colonial-era architecture, major WWII battle history, and edgy art galleries.
Come with us on a walking tour that starts with a visit to some lovely heritage buildings that have been absorbed into the fabric of Hort Park, a nine-hectare national park tucked into the Southern Ridges. Learn about the fierce WWII battles fought nearby and take a look at HortHouse, a conserved heritage building once used as accommodation for railway staff; these days it's a training centre for CUGE (Centre for Urban Greenery & Ecology). We'll meander along several of HortPark's themed gardens and admire the colourful flowering ixora and allamandas plants.
The tour includes a visit to the adjacent SP Jain School, a stately building that was originally an officers' mess hall back in the 1930s. It then became the Institute of Dental Health in 1970s before being turned into the administration building of a top global management school.
A refreshment break will be enjoyed across the street at the historic Gillman Barracks, a former British military barracks that has been conserved and repurposed as a cluster of art galleries and restaurants framed in jungle foliage.
