Discovering Singapore's First Architect, with Julian Davison
Price : S$85 / ticket
Our first architect, Irishman George Coleman, left an indelible mark on Singapore with his exquisite structures. Discover more about this remarkable man with Dr. Julian Davison* and Jane.
Our evening will start with an intoductory talk at one of George's gems (and incidentally Jane's favourite building in Singapore) — the Armenian Church. From there we will walk a route covering his other still-existing creations as well as exploring the site of his own house and many others which sadly are no longer present.
We will end our evening at Caldwell House in Chijmes where, over a glass of wine or similar, we can chat more about the legacy left to today's Singapore by this early pioneer.
*Julian is a national treasure and a prolific writer. A well-known historian and author, his credits include several books on Singapore's heritage buildings, including his very popular "Black & White: The Singapore House, 1898-1941," and "Singapore Shophouse." He has also been involved in a number of programmes on Singapore (and regional) history as an expert and a presenter. The son of an architect who lived in Singapore and Malaysia as a child, Julian went on to earn a doctorate in Oriental and African Studies.
