After many years of friendship, Julian and Jane are delighted to be working together on a topic of mutual interest — the beautiful colonial heritage homes of Singapore, known as Black & Whites.
Julian needs little introduction as he is well known as the author of several books on Singapore's heritage buildings, including his very popular Black & White: The Singapore House, 1898-1941, and Singapore Shophouse books, as well as the presenter of a number of programmes on our history. The son of an architect who lived in Singapore and Malaysia as a child, Julian went on to earn a doctorate in Oriental and African Studies.
His talk will focus on the many influences that brought about this wonderful genre of heritage architecture and on its links with British colonial history.
In the delightful setting of one of the older style B&Ws just a stone's throw away from Tanglin Road, enjoy not only Julian's talk but also a short tour of this house, all washed down by a couple of glasses of wine, and accompanied by a delicious selection of cheese.
This will be a very special evening, with limited space so please register soon!
