Join us at Kampong Glam for a unique exploration of the deeper meaning of our Christmas customs. This walking tour will first take us through key sites and the history of Kampong Glam to steep us in the feel and spirit of the Middle East.
Our western Christmas celebrations are laden with layers of symbolism and beauty from the Middle East and pagan Europe. We dive into the season with gusto and get consumed with decorating our homes, preparing feasts and gifting with little or no understanding of the origins of these beautiful customs.
We will stop at a family store that has been in operation since the 1920’s in the Arab Quarter. Here, its owner will explain the origins of traditional Christmas resins and scents, including frankincense, myrrh, pine, clove and agarwoods. We’ll learn how to use them for healing and to cleanse and prepare the home for gatherings and prayer. Lovely sample kits will be available for purchase so you can take what you have learned back home, and maybe give one to a friend as a holiday gift.
From there we will walk to our secret shophouse location for some Christmas treats and a talk by our very own spiritual guide, Dani, on the origins and metaphorical meanings of Christmas symbols, including the Christmas tree, the Eastern Star, the gifts of the Three Wise Men, the use of fire and candles, the pagan correspondences to the Winter Solstice and much more.
Together we will engage in a shared ritual to “cast off” the unwanted imprints of 2020 and call in the promise of 2021. Renewal and enlightenment are the best gifts of all.

Joined Jane’s special Halloween tour.
Was really great evening.
Enjoyed the history, lore and the special “guests” at the end!
Once again, I had a fabulous experience with Jane’s Tours! Our guide Elaine was very knowledgable about the areas we visited and even helped us take the best possible photos. The tour was a great mixture of the different cultures that make up Singapore, including the Chinese, Indian and Malay people and the Arab influence. Beautiful sights, tastes and smells- I highly recommend this tour!
As a resident of Singapore, I feel lucky to have been able to take advantage of more tours with Jane’s Tours than I can count. I particularly love the Tuesday walks exploring the different distinct areas of Singapore…including Tiong Bahru, Kampong Glam, Geylang and The Botanic Gardens to name a few. Jane and her team are knowledgeable without being over -facing; interesting in the telling of local stories and fun to be with. They take time to make everyone feel welcome and included, and I have joined them many times on my own, making friends along the way.
