Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walk: Hidden Treasures of Orchard Road

Peatix Orchard Treasures.jpg

Price: $75 / ticket

The name “Orchard Road” conjures up visions of gleaming shopping, office and apartment towers, filled with glitzy shops, glamorous hotels and high-end restaurants run by celebrity chefs. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that there’s a rich history lurking around today’s Orchard Road. See the fascinating nooks and crannies that bear testament to its earlier years as an area dominated by plantations, farms, and yes, orchards, plus 19th-century colonial-era homes and buildings that survive today!

Starting at Dhoby Ghaut you’ll learn the origins of its name. As we follow Orchard Rd., you’ll hear stories about nutmeg planters, their sumptuous estates and the consequences of the mysterious “nutmeg” disease. Discover one of the oldest churches in Singapore known as the “Scots Church,” nestled at the foot of Fort Canning.

A walk past the Istana Park for a glimpse of the official residence of the President of Singapore will remind us of Singapore’s colonial roots. Enjoy a unique opportunity to visit the last remaining traditional southern Chinese mansion brought back to its former glory and we’ll also catch a glimpse of the home the late prime minister Lee Kuan Yew lived in for most of his life.

And finally, be blown away by the beauty of Emerald Hill with its Peranakan shophouses, a tucked-away enclave of tranquillity a stone's throw from hustle and bustle of the Orchard shopping district.

Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a LHOKO message to all registered.

“I particularly love the Tuesday walks exploring the different distinct areas of Singapore...including Tiong Bahru, Kampong Glam, Geylang and The Botanic Gardens to name a few. Jane and her team are knowledgeable without being over -facing; interesting in the telling of local stories and fun to be with. “

“Jane’s tours are always fascinating. She recruits such excellent tour guides. We saw several temples and renovated shop houses. The history, diversity and cultural heritage of Singapore is so extensive and celebrated in these unique tours. Loved it thanks...”
