Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks: Little India - Cattle, Jasmine, Spice & All Things Nice

Explore the heart and soul of Singapore’s Indian community — Little India. It is today a heritage district associated with vibrant colours, loud music, the fragrance of flowers and spices, and an eclectic mix of houses.

But on this tour, you will be hearing not just about its present-day vibrancy, but also its early days of cattle slaughtering, horse racing, baby delivering and more! Your tour starts from the corner of Rochor and Perak roads where you will see a lesser known, religiously diverse, and contrastingly hipster section of Little India.

You will find out about the different community groups worshipping at the religious spaces there, which includes a visit to the historical and architecturally marvellous Abdul Gaffoor Mosque.

Check out the area's new hip-quotient and find out how old run-down buildings found a new identity, from a former-school-turned-hotel (Wanderlust Hotel) to numerous budget backpacker’s lodgings as well as cafes and restaurants serving an international menu.

Moovvve on to Campbell Lane (one of the many roads with a European name), and Buffalo and Kerbau roads (names associated with cattle), to discover traditional Indian trades, food, customs, attire, decorations and businesses, and uncover the significance of each.

A short break at Tekka Centre will allow sampling of local fare and observe where and how locals live and shop. Along the way, you will get to see the last remaining Chinese villa in Little India and the only North Indian temple in Singapore (see if you can spot it). A must visit is the Sri Veerakaliamman Temple, a national monument, where you learn to appreciate the symbolism and meaning behind Hinduism and its rituals.

We will end at Mustafa Centre, the 24-hour mega-mart, where you can enjoy some retail therapy or just browse through the mind-boggling variety of goods, a reported 300,000 items.

Our Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks are aimed at visitors and new Singapore residents, but we find even “old timers” learn a lot. We keep to a maximum of 10 participants and pace the walk to take our sultry climate into account — lots of water and air-con stops are included.

Please note confirmation of this tour including the exact meeting place etc will be sent via email to all those registered about 24-hours in advance; this will be preceded by a Peatix or Verlocal message to all registered.

We do need a minimum number of 6 to run these; occasionally we have to cancel due to insufficient numbers — but we try not to! (If we must, we’ll of course refund your payment.)

Please note that the cost of these tours is a little higher because we are keeping the group size small.

The quality, however, will be very high. And don’t just take it from us, here are comments from a recent Tuesday Small-Group Discovery tour:

"I would like to thank you for the tour yesterday, it’s been a wonderful morning! Your guide is amazing and so expert about history."

"I just wanted to let you know that my aunt had a brilliant time yesterday. She couldn't say enough about the tour and how great your guide was. Thanks so much! I will certainly recommend you."

"Your guide was WONDERFUL! We all enjoyed her. I'm looking forward to the next tour.”
