Chinatown Overview: Temples, Shophouses, Food & Secret Societies
This walk weaves in visits to the diverse houses of worship on South Bridge Road, one of Singapore’s “harmony” streets, and also home to goldsmiths, herbalists and more. We wind our way through the heart of Chinatown to see old shophouses, a former Cantonese opera theatre, a traditional wet market, and the famous Buddha Tooth temple.
Hear the sad tales of Sago Lane and the tough life of Singapore's hard-working coolies. Learn about early Singapore's "underbelly"—its secret societies, houses of ill repute, and opium dens.
After our last stop at the City Gallery—where you see a world-famous diorama of Singapore and learn about our city planning past, present, and future— your guide will drop you off at the ever-popular Maxwell Food Centre for discoveries of the edible variety! message to all registered.
Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a LHOKO message to all registered.

“I particularly love the Tuesday walks exploring the different distinct areas of Singapore...including Tiong Bahru, Kampong Glam, Geylang and The Botanic Gardens to name a few. Jane and her team are knowledgeable without being over -facing; interesting in the telling of local stories and fun to be with. “
“Jane’s tours are always fascinating. She recruits such excellent tour guides. We saw several temples and renovated shop houses. The history, diversity and cultural heritage of Singapore is so extensive and celebrated in these unique tours. Loved it thanks...”
