Art & History Walk: The Fascinating Sculpture & Architecture of the CBD

We're delighted to offer another AHA tour — a wonderful mix of Art, History & Architecture.

Art: From "Shimmering Pearls" by local artist Han Sai Por to Salvador Dali's "Newton," we will explore several sculptural artworks in the CBD area. They will include the UOB's 2017 showcase of award-winning artists from several South East Asian countries. In particular, come and appreciate the prestigious 2017 Painting of the Year by Thai artist Sukit Choosri called "One Life" that aims to open the mind of the viewer to see beyond the immediate.

History: Learn about the Telok Ayer Basin reclamation and transformation of the 1820s timber-and-attap old market to the cast-iron filigree beauty of today’s Lau Pa Sat food court. Plus discover the pioneering entrepreneurs of Market St — the Chettiars — from how they did business including setting their interest rates to their kavadi carriers’ stopping point at Indian Banks on the eve of Thaipusam.

Architecture: Landmarks include Raffles Place; the morphed Ocean Financial Centre; the 1930s former regional HQ of a Chinese bank along Cecil St; and the Art Deco Black Swan grand bistro and bar. We'll also visit a repurposed old building with magic modern touches by an international fashion designer and hear about the building’s heritage, as well as get acquainted with a BCA Green Mark Platinum awarded commercial building designed by the winner of a Pritzker Prize (architecture’s highest honour, modelled after the Nobel prize).
