Bukit Brown Walk — Exploring our Sikh Heritage

cover-swC3zel235cMs0XYRzVFRZAY3VGhB9Pu.jpg

Date & Time 17 Nov 9am - 12.30pm

Price $60/pax

Join us for a walk around the iconic Bukit Brown cemetery, the largest Chinese cemetery outside of China, with Claire Leow, co-founder of All Things Bukit Brown. This will be a wonderful way to not only explore this lovely area which is not only a cemetery, but also a heritage park with a lush forest setting.

There we will learn about Singapore's history & both Chinese culture and traditions as well as how they merge with other cultural influences, such as the lovely Peranakan tiles on many of the graves as well as the Sikh tomb guardians.

We will particularly focus on Sikhism in Singapore which has its roots in the military and policing forces of the British Empire, with the earliest Sikh arriving in 1849. Forever associated with protection, they were the chosen guardians of several prominent Chinese people for their Bukit Brown tombs, as shown in the photo above.

Tuesday Discovery Walk: The History & World Heritage of the Botanic Gardens

Tuesday Discovery Walk: The History & World Heritage of the Botanic Gardens

A testament to Singapore’s reputation as a City in a Garden, the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) became the third one to be listed as a World Heritage Site, after Kew Gardens in England and the Padova Gardens in Italy. It is also Singapore's first World Heritage Site.

During this tour, you will discover its 150 years of history, including its role as the birth place of Southeast Asia's rubber and orchid industries. Orchids have been closely associated with the Gardens since 1859 and the products of the breeding programme are displayed in their full splendour in the National Orchid Garden. With over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids on display, the beauty of these gorgeous blooms is absolutely a sight to behold.

Tour highlights include the bandstand; garden sculptures; Heritage Trees; and historical Burkhill Hall with its prized collection of VIP orchids such as Dendrobium Margaret Thatcher and Papilionanda William Catherine. The tour will end with a visit to the SBG's Heritage Museum which features artefacts, plant specimens, rare botanical books and botanical paintings that date back to the early 19th century. Here you will learn about the key personalities that have shaped and marked this iconic place.

Our Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks are aimed at visitors and new Singapore residents, but we find even "old timers" learn a lot. We keep to a max of 10 and pace the walk to take our sultry climate into account; lots of water and air-con stops are included. Due to the small-group size the price is just a little higher.

Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a Peatix or Verlocal message to all registered. We do need a minimum number of 6 to run these; occasionally we have to cancel due to insufficient numbers — but we try not to!

"I would like to thank you for the tour yesterday, it’s been a wonderful morning! Your guide is amazing and so expert about history".

"I just wanted to let you know that my aunt had a brilliant time yesterday. She couldn't say enough about the tour and how great your guide was. Thanks so much! I will certainly recommend you".

"Your guide was WONDERFUL! We all enjoyed her. I'm looking forward to the next tour."

Special highlights tour of Civic District & Telok Ayer

Special highlights tour of Civic District & Telok Ayer

Especially for visitors to Singapore who may be looking for something interesting to do after the Christmas festivities, we're offering a "Tuesday" tour on a Friday!

We'll firstly explore the historic Civic District with its beautiful and impressive colonial buildings - including the Fullerton Building (the old General Post Office), the National Gallery (former Supreme Court & City Hall buildings), the Asian Civilisations Museum, the Victoria Concert Hall & Theatre and the Arts House (the old Parliament building).

You will learn about why, how and when Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in this sparely populated island in January 1819 to set up a trading post on behalf of the East India Company, his vision for its future and how he devised an early city plan.

We will then cross the Cavenagh Bridge, the only suspension bridge in Singapore, made with strong Scottish steel. There you will learn about the importance of the Singapore River in our country's trading history.

From there we'll walk from Boat Quay, once the hub of trade in Singapore, to Telok Ayer Street, where Singapore's coastline used to be before land reclamation. We'll visit the UNESCO awarded Wak Hai Cheng Bio and Thian Hock Keng temples – great examples of SEA temple architecture - as well as the Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim shrine to learn the importance of these places of worship to some the various communities which came here in the 19th century.

Small Group Walking Tours for Visitors & Newbies: Cannonballs & Bathing Maidens — Singapore's Early History & Mysteries

Discover the magic of historic Fort Canning Hill. Over the last 700 years it has been transformed from the home of the ancient kings of Temasek to one of the seats of the colonial government (Raffles was very fond of it!), to a military base during WWII, to its current incarnation as a public park with beautiful art installations.

Starting at the foot of the hill, we will first explore some of our island's oldest landmarks such as the Armenian Church, Central Fire Station and Masonic Lodge. We will then climb up through the European burial grounds to hear the stories of some of Singapore’s notable 19th century personalities. Following which, we will wander through the lush oasis of Singapore 's first Botanic Gardens with its fascinating fig trees, to be carried away by stories of ancient springs and bathing princesses while visiting the shrine of the Malay Kings.

Our final stop on the Hill will be to learn about the dramatic events which took place in its underground bunker in the days leading up to the Japanese invasion in 1942.

We will finish our tour in the cooling air of the nearby National Museum of Singapore, where we will learn more about the history and architecture of Singapore's oldest museum.

Journey to the West: Jurong & Beyond

Inspired by the legendary 16th century tale of a Buddhist monk's pilgrimage to the “Western Region”, this tour will be an exploration of Singapore’s Western part. Known mainly for its industrial zone and shipyards, Jurong will surprise you with its hills, gardens, national monuments, with its important past but also its a vibrant future.

To honour the roots of the Journey to the West tale, we will start our journey with a visit to Singapore’s most bizarre and unforgettable attraction – Haw Par Villa, formerly known as the Tiger Balm Gardens. A true gem from a lost era, this one-of-its-kind theme park with its over 1000 quirky statues and gruesome depictions of underworld will introduce you to Chinese Mythology & Folklore.

Next we will head to Jurong Hill and The Eye in the Sky, the Jurong Hill Lookout Tower which hosted many foreign dignitaries including royalty, and which offers a panoramic view of the entire industrial zone. On the way there we will visit another heritage gem, Jurong Town Hall, a boldly futuristic building and a symbol of Singapore’s industrial push.

Our pilgrimage will continue at Nanyang University; designed in the Chinese National style, blending both traditional Chinese and modern elements, the former university building is a witness to the history of the Chinese diaspora and education.

Last but not least will be our visit to the Dragon Kiln, one of the last surviving brick-built kilns in Singapore. The firing of this kiln takes place only twice a year and we will be there to witness this now fairly rare occurrence, and to understand and appreciate the disappearing art of wood-firing!

THIS WILL BE A FUN OUTING FOR CHILDREN TOO!
