Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks: Civic District

Peatix Civic District.jpg

Date: Tuesday 18 Dec

Time: 9am - 1230pm

Price: $70

This tour will explore the historic Civic District with its beautiful and impressive colonial buildings - including the Fullerton Building (the old General Post Office), the National Gallery (former Supreme Court & City Hall buildings), the Asian Civilisations Museum, the Victoria Concert Hall & Theatre and the Arts House (the old Parliament building).

You will learn about why, how and when Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in this sparely populated island in January 1819 to set up a trading post on behalf of the East India Company, his vision for its future and how he devised an early city plan. You will also cross Cavenagh Bridge, the only suspension bridge in Singapore, made with strong Scottish steel. From there, you will learn about the importance of the Singapore River in our country's trading history.

Our Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks are aimed at visitors and new Singapore residents, but we find even “old timers” learn a lot. We keep to a maximum of 10 participants and pace the walk to take our sultry climate into account — lots of water and air-con stops are included.

Please note confirmation of this tour including the exact meeting place etc will be sent via email to all those registered about 24-hours in advance; this will be preceded by a Verlocal message to all registered.

Here are comments from a recent Tuesday Small-Group Discovery tours:

"I would like to thank you for the tour yesterday, it’s been a wonderful morning! Your guide is amazing and so expert about history."

"I just wanted to let you know that my aunt had a brilliant time yesterday. She couldn't say enough about the tour and how great your guide was. Thanks so much! I will certainly recommend you."

"Your guide was WONDERFUL! We all enjoyed her. I'm looking forward to the next tour.”

Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks: Tales of the Singapore River Bank Including Spiffy New Robertson Quay

Date: Tuesday 23 October

Time: 9am - 1230pm

Price: $70

On this tour we will follow a living tale of people that shaped Singapore.

From Orang Laut and their sacred stone through ancient majesty of Temasek to the flocks of trading ships and multitude of Immigrants looking to build a better life in 19th century.

From the Fullerton hotel, which previously served as the colony's General Post Office, we will walk across Cavenagh Bridge - Singapore’s oldest bridge, we will walk along magnificent colonial buildings with great view of shophouses of Boat Quay up to former canneries, ice houses and godowns at Clarke Quay.

We will visit the River House, one of only two traditional Chinese houses remaining in Singapore.

The walk will also take us to Tan Si Chong Su Temple, which used to face the former river island of Pulau Saigon, visit Masjid Omar Kampong Melaka, the oldest mosque in Singapore to end our journey at Thong Chai Medical Institution, where free medical treatment saved the lives of thousands of coolies.

Our Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks are aimed at visitors and new Singapore residents, but we find even "old timers" learn a lot. We keep to a max of 10 and pace the walk to take our sultry climate into account; lots of water and air-con stops are included. Due to the small-group size the price is just a little higher.

Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a peatix or verlocal message to all registered.

We do need a minimum number of 6 to run these; occasionally we have to cancel due to insufficient numbers — but we try not to!

Special highlights tour of Civic District & Telok Ayer

Especially for visitors to Singapore who may be looking for something interesting to do after the Christmas festivities, we're offering a "Tuesday" tour on a Wednesday!

We'll firstly explore the historic Civic District with its beautiful and impressive colonial buildings - including the Fullerton Building (the old General Post Office), the National Gallery (former Supreme Court & City Hall buildings), the Asian Civilisations Museum, the Victoria Concert Hall & Theatre and the Arts House (the old Parliament building).

You will learn about why, how and when Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in this sparely populated island in January 1819 to set up a trading post on behalf of the East India Company, his vision for its future and how he devised an early city plan.

We will then cross the Cavenagh Bridge, the only suspension bridge in Singapore, made with strong Scottish steel. There you will learn about the importance of the Singapore River in our country's trading history.

From there we'll walk from Boat Quay, once the hub of trade in Singapore, to Telok Ayer Street, where Singapore's coastline used to be before land reclamation. We'll visit the UNESCO awarded Wak Hai Cheng Bio and Thian Hock Keng temples – great examples of SEA temple architecture - as well as the Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim shrine to learn the importance of these places of worship to some the various communities which came here in the 19th century.
