Date: Tuesday 28 August
Time: 9am - 1230pm
Orchard Road — the name conjures up visions of glitzy shops, glamorous hotels and high-end restaurants run by celebrity chefs. But dig a little deeper and you’ll unearth much less known nooks and crannies that bear testament to its earlier years as an area replete with plantations, farms, and yes, orchards!
And just to prove this is a different Orchard Road, we'll start at the very...end! Starting at Dhoby Ghaut to learn the origins of its name, we'll visit one of the oldest churches in Singapore known as the “Scots Church,” nestled beside Singapore’s incubators for talented artists in the making — SOTA and LaSalle. A walk past the Istana Park for a glimpse of the official residence of the President of Singapore will remind us Singapore’s colonial roots and you can also admire the nearby facade of the last remaining traditional southern Chinese mansion.
And finally you will be blown away by the beauty of Emerald Hill with its Peranakan shophouses, a tucked-away enclave of tranquility a stone's throw from hustle and bustle of the Orchard shopping district.
Our Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks are aimed at visitors and new Singapore residents, but we find even "old timers" learn a lot. We keep to a max of 10 and pace the walk to take our sultry climate into account; lots of water and air-con stops are included. Due to the small-group size the price is just a little higher.
Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a peatix or verlocal message to all registered.
We do need a minimum number of 6 to run these; occasionally we have to cancel due to insufficient numbers — but we try not to!
